Green shoots: number of new homes on increase

The AJ can reveal further evidence the house-building industry is starting to bounce back

Following on from recent Glenigan figures which showed fewer private home schemes were being shelved, it has emerged there was a 74 per cent surge in the number of new homes built in the three months to the end of April, with 31,038 new houses registered during this period. This is a rise of 17,859 compared with the same period last year.

The National House-Building Council (NHBC) figures show private developers are leading the recovery, with a 113 per cent year-on-year rise in homes registered across that sector to 20,538.

However, registrations were also up 28 per cent among public sector builders, such as housing associations, to 10,500.

Chief executive of the NHBC, Imtiaz Farookhi, said: ‘The challenge will be to sustain this growth against the backdrop of an uncertain environment, as the new coalition settles in and sets out its strategy for meeting the country’s housing needs.’

In 2009, the number of new homes built plummeted to its lowest level since World War II as many developments were abandoned or delayed
