Green light for Studio Egret West and Hawkins\Brown's Croydon bridge

[First look + plans] Studio Egret West and Hawkins\Brown have won planning permission for this jointly designed pedestrian bridge at East Croydon Station

The bridge will link the proposed Ruskin Square development by Foster + Partners for developer Stanhope, which lies to the west of the station, with Make’s Cherry Orchard Road scheme for property company Menta, to the east.

Backed by Network Rail, the bridge will have a six-metre tall Vierendeel truss structure, which will be prefabricated on a neighbouring site and will slide into position over two weekends. The main span will be supported by four frosted-glass-clad lift structures which, according to the design team, will ‘glow at night like a line of coloured beacons, making the bridge deck appear to levitate’.

The bridge is part of the wider East Croydon masterplan, also drawn up by Studio Egret West for the London Borough of Croydon, which aims to revamp the transport interchange, transform the public realm and ‘create a robust framework for significant development around one of the UK’s busiest railway stations’.

The East Croydon Masterplan was adopted by Croydon Council as Interim Planning Guidance on 21 March.
