Grant Associates masterplans Sydney's Botanic Gardens

Bath-based landscape design firm Grant Associates is to work on a new masterplan for the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney

The practice will work with local company Cox Richardson Architects and Planners to re-imagine 30 ha of gardens and similarly sized surrounding public realm.

The scheme comes as the garden, which features views of the Sydney opera House, approaches 200 years in existence.

Grant Associates director Keith French told AJ the firm’s work on the recently opened Gardens by the Bay in Singapore had helped secure the Sydney project.

‘Gardens by the Bay is one of the landmark gardens in recent times and no doubt it helped us put forward our experience and abilities to do such a project,’ he said.

The practice has opened an office in Singapore since winning that scheme, and is active in the market there.

But it will carry out most of the Sydney work from Bath with staff travelling every four to six weeks to Australia.

‘It is a lovely project to be involved in, an amazing site, with a balance to be found between preserving the past and presenting the future,’ said French.

He said it was too soon to consider a base in Sydney but did not rule our looking for further work in Australia in due course.

‘We look for international projects that are unique or offer us a particular approach,’ he added.

The integrated masterplan for the Royal Botanic Gardens is due to be unveiled in November 2013.
