Gort Scott bags planning for Jesus College ‘eco’ offices

[First look + plans] Gort Scott has won planning permission for this new build office project for Jesus College, University of Cambridge

The four-storey L-shaped building is planned for a site on Hills Road next to Eric Lyons’ Highsett span housing and the 1860s Claremont Terraces model development.

Designed with Max Fordham and Bidwells, the competition-winning project is aiming for BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and features ventilation chimneys which draw fresh air across the floor plates.

In a statement, the architect said: ‘In urban design terms, the building’s footprint and massing bridge the transition between the façades of the Grand Union Hotel terrace, which meet the pavement, and the front gardens of Highsett.

‘The neighbouring buildings demand the highest respect, but they also invite a new building with its own personality, which is capable of joining the ensemble in a varied streetscape.’

The statement continued: ‘The aim has been for a building that is comfortable to work in with high levels of user control. To achieve this the building that uses a simple natural ventilation system rather than over-designed mechanical ventilation and air conditioning system and the narrow floor plans that allow a good daylight factor to the whole office and clear views out to the walled garden and street.’

The project is planned to complete in late 2014.

Having looked at the planning application I continue to fail to see anything unusually eco about this project. The massing and modelling of the rear of the building is also rather sad - a compromise between good neighbourlyness and commercial greed for floor area.
