Good turn

Presidential candidate Paul Hyett did himself no harm at all this week, stepping into the breach at short notice when the RIBA small practice conference lost its chair. With more than 150 delegates attending, Hyett had the opportunity to remind members of his own experience as a small practitioner, which is about to come to an end following the merger of his practice with Ryder.

Meanwhile fellow candidate Alex Reid is campaigning hard - on the web - from his remote eyrie in Cambridge. He has plenty of potential nominees (including some weirdos who have also signed Hyett's forms; who are they supporting? ), but a question mark remains over whether it is appropriate for the former director general to stand. West Country maverick Brian Godfrey continues to provide sound bites and light relief.
