Howell Smith Partnership has won the award for the best housing development of the year in the Guardian/Homebuilder Design Awards 2000. Its restoration and conversion of the former Holloway Sanatorium to produce 23 new houses formed the centrepiece of a 213-dwelling scheme in Virginia Water, Surrey. It was voted best development by a panel which included former riba president Michael Manser and architect and chair of the Popular Housing Forum, Robert Adam. The scheme also bagged a second place for the best restoration and conservation scheme.
