Godfrey becomes 'people's choice' for RIBA president

  • Comment

Brian Godfrey has built up a formidable 32-point lead in the race to become RIBA president, according to the latest Internet poll of AJ readers. This week the Devon-based small practitioner notched up 57 per cent of the vote while his closest challenger, Paul Hyett, scored 25 per cent.

Former RIBA director general Alex Reid is in third place on 18 per cent. Godfrey's policy of making the RIBA less 'London-centric' appears to be working and he said last week that he has been 'gobsmacked' by the breadth of support he has received. After announcing his intention to run last month, Godfrey has received backing from architects in Hebden Bridge, Nottinghamshire, Somerset, Wales, Winchester and Portsmouth, but only one nomination from London. He said: 'I am running to win, but even if I don't, it will make quite an impact for small practices.'
