A steel exoskeleton is to shroud a 1960s block near London's Globe Theatre in Southwark.
The £38 million project by RHWL Partnership involves stripping cladding and fittings from the 11-storey office, building a new 45m core and demolishing smaller blocks behind. The curved steel is being tied to the existing structure to extend the floor area. Work on the 17,000m 2Riverside House started last year and is due to end in May 2002. Bovis Lend Lease will install raised floors, and restaurants and shops are being built at ground level.
