Glasgow announces City of Architecture programme

Glasgow 1999 has formally announced its programme of over 200 events which will comprise its year as uk City of Architecture and Design.

Launched in the presence of Donald Dewar, secretary of state for Scotland, the programme will include exhibitions on the work of Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe, on the subjects of sport and food, and an examination of the most important new building projects around the world.

The rias will hold its annual convention in Foster and Partners' Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (the 'Armadillo'). Billed as 'the most important conference ever to be held in the uk on architecture and design', it will be called 'From the City to the Spoon' and will feature speakers including Richard Rogers, Javier Mariscal and David Page.

To coincide with the celebrations, the Mackintosh School of Architecture has been commissioned by J C Decaux, the street-furniture advertising group, to design a prototype bus shelter for the city.
