There has been considerable discussion in the media recently about the new Wembley Stadium, its design and its funding. It is true that the design is for the most expensive stadium ever built, but rather than see that as a reason to be critical we should be proud that sport in this country has risen to a level capable of supporting such a great building. It is worth noting that bigger and more expensive stadiums are being planned around the world - so enjoy it while the title rests in England.
The real issue is not how much it will cost, but how much revenue it will generate.
Comparisons with Stadium Australia, our design for the 2000 Olympics, are relevant but seating capacity is not the appropriate yardstick. The new Wembley is around twice the size of Stadium Australia with about 600,000m2 of facilities. These will provide a destination for millions each year. I am quite certain that the new stadium will become a great landmark on the north London skyline, of which we can all be proud.
