Frederick Gibberd Partnership has won planning consent for a £10.5 million mental health unit at Charing Cross Hospital in west London.

The 6,500m 2scheme, for West London Mental Health NHS Trust, will provide 88 beds for adult acute mental health patients. The new wards have been designed to replicate a domestic environment and avoid an institutionalised feel in the secure accommodation wards.

An atrium covering a cafe will bring light into the centre of the building, which opens onto a courtyard and terraced space. The project has gone out to tender, with work due to begin on site in January, for completion in May 2003.
