Artist Gerry Judah has completed a 26-metre high arch that soars over Goodwood House, in West Sussex
Designed for Mercedes-Benz the 90 metres long, 160-tonne steel sculpture was erected for this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. The sculptor, who once worked at TP Bennett and Son as well as Richard Seifert and Partners, has been designing the centrepiece artwork at the festival since 1997.
Gerry Judah: ‘It was a tremendous opportunity to be asked by Mercedes-Benz to create a sculpture to celebrate their 120 years of motor racing. For this we have pushed the limits of what is possible with size and complexity in engineering, with a 160 tonne steel arch connecting two of their great historic cars over the top of Goodwood House.
‘The sculpture also celebrates the dynamic between Mercedes-Benz and the Festival of Speed and with the help of Capita for the structural engineering and Littlehampton Welding for the fabrication and installation, I believe we pulled it off.’
