Velux Lifetime Housing Design competition

A double-height space on the ground floor creates sufficient volume to accommodate an additional floor if expansion is needed. This concept allows a one-bedroom building to expand to three floors with the addition of platforms. Services have all been placed within the permanent brick walls which extend forward to frame the garden and provide the entrance and cycle storage.

A bank of velux Roof Windows supported from laminated timber beams, which span the walls, lights the space. The roof-light glazing is clear at deck- level but vision is obscured at other levels for privacy. All the roof lights open electronically and also have electronically-operated internal blinds.
