Fuksas and Ushida Findlay among finalists for Oxfordshire chapel

An intriguing shortlist which includes Ushida Findlay, Niall McLaughlin and Italian starchitect Massimiliano Fuksas has been named in the contest to design a new college chapel in Oxfordshire.

The trio are joined in the final of the competition, which is being run by the RIBA on behalf of Ripon College, Cuddesdon, by Terry Pawson Architects and Sarah Hare Architects.

More than 125 practices threw their hat into the ring to design the new ‘training’ chapel - part of a major programme of ‘expansion and consolidation’ of the college’s buildings which are being updated to ‘meet the needs of ministerial formation and Christian education’ in the 21st century.

If Fuksas (pictured) wins, it will mark his UK ‘built’ debut. Despite being shortlisted for the London 2012 Olympics’ aquatic centre and drawing up a masterplan for Salford, the globetrotter has yet to complete a building on these shores.

The Principal of Cuddesdon, the Revd Canon Professor Martyn Percy said: ‘Our hope is for a chapel that will help shape the future of ordination training, inspiring and illuminating a fresh generation of ordinands as they prepare for ministry in the 21st century.’

The architects now have seven weeks to draw up their concept proposals with a winner announced on 7 September.

  • I want Sarah Hare. But I mistakenly voted for Fuksas
