Foyer's focal sculpture should be reinstated

It was indeed sad and surprising that the hanging sculpture which originally adorned the foyer space of the Barbican Arts Centre was removed (AJ 11.1.01).

As one of the original team at Chamberlin Powell and Bon which introduced the Australian artist Michel Santry to the project, I would strongly support the sculpture's reinstatement as part of the refurbishment.

Santry's original design superbly answered his brief, which was to create a focus in the extensive foyer space to identify a meeting point. He also designed, with the architects, the very fine safety curtain to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, which is thankfully still there, an exercise which turned a utilitarian object into an art work in its own right.
