Four on shortlist for town square landmark design

Four practices have been shortlisted in a competition to design a landmark feature, including a town clock, for Dunstable, Bedfordshire. The winning design, from David Ashton Hill Architects, Bedford Design Group, Plowman Brown Architects or Studio E Architects, will be built in a town square. The cost of the be displayed in the local library in late July.

Cezary Bednarski from Studio E Architects said: 'It is not an easy design because it is in a conservation area which may present problems with modern materials. The brief asks for something that fits in with the context and that is open to interpretation.'

The winner, to be announced in mid-August, will be appointed project manager for the scheme, due to be finished in 1999. Each team will also receive £1000.
