The AJ can exclusively reveal the four finalists in the competition to design a new footbridge over the Rochdale Canal in New Islington, Manchester.

Ian McChesney, with engineer Atelier One, and London-based Gunning Groothuizen Architects are among the quartet of practices shortlisted by contest backer Urban Splash. The firms are joined by up-and-coming practice Glowacka Rennie Architects, in collaboration with engineer Techniker, and London-based Gollifer Langston Architects, with Michael Hadi Associates, lighting specialist Foto-Ma and quantity surveyor Measur.

The popular RIBA-organised competition - the fi rst of three major competitions planned by Urban Splash this year - attracted 87 entries. Each of the design teams was asked to come up with proposals for a structure to straddle a new canal junction and link the huge New Islington millennium community development to its neighbour, the Ancoats Urban Village. A winner is expected to be announced next month.
