The team will submit a bid to the European Space Agency as part of its Aurora programme, which is working on a long-term plan for the robotic and human exploration of solar system bodies that could harbour traces of life. It is aiming to use the Moon as a way station to prepare a manned mission to Mars.
As part of the bid, which also includes Italian technology firm Alta, Foster + Partners will look at lunar materials and how they can be used for construction.
Foster + Partners, together with URS, has already designed the world’s first private spaceport in New Mexico, to be used by Virgin Galactic (pictured).
