Foster and Rogers square up at Elephant and Castle

Old rivals Foster and Partners and the Richard Rogers Partnership are set to battle it out in the developer/architect competition to redevelop the Elephant and Castle area in Southwark, south London.

Both practices have been longlisted in the developer-led regeneration project for the 60ha site, Foster in a team led by ws Atkins and Rogers working with Stanhope.

The other ten developers are Southwark Land Regeneration, including Godfrey Bradman Interests; London and Amsterdam Developments including Buro Happold and fsp Architects and Planners; Countryside Properties including Calford Seaden Partnership; hbg Management; Miller Group; St George South London, including Berkeley Group; Tibbalds Monro; Schal with Tarmac; Mott MacDonald; and mace with Manhattan Loft, Urban Catalyst and mab.

Council leader Niall Duffy said the area represented a magnificent opportunity to regenerate in a 'radical and holistic way', reflecting local and national policies on sustainable development.
