Foster and Rogers battle it out for £1 billion Barangaroo project

Big-hitters Norman Foster and Richard Rogers are going head to head for a huge project in Sydney Harbour, Australia

The pair are down to the last two in the contest to oversee the redevelopment of the 22ha former industrial and shipping site, according to reports. Foster + Partners have teamed up on the bid with developers Brookfield, while Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners is understood to be working with Lend Lease.

The contest was launched in October 2008 by the New South Wales Government after the original architect Hill Thalis Architecture + Urban Projects was removed from the £1 billion scheme.

The organisers want to return the ‘majestic’ headland, next to Sydney’s Central Business District, to the community ‘after nearly 100 years of industrial use’.

Plans for the plot, which was previously known as East Darling Harbour, include parks, new ferry terminal, offices and up to 1,500 new homes.

A winner is expected to be unveiled early next year.
