Foster + Partners and a joint venture featuring Adjaye Associates are among six firms to have unveiled designs for the new $500 million (£350 million) Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. USA

Adjaye Associates, which formed a joint venture with The Freelon Group and Davis Brody Bond, and Foster + Partners are taking part in the competition for the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture, which will be located on a 2ha plot adjacent to the Washington Monument on Constitution Avenue.

Following the current exhibition of designs, a competition board or jury will select a firm to present a formal proposal for the design of the museum. The name of the team is to be announced in mid-April.

Construction is expected to begin in 2012, and the museum will open to the public in 2015.

Other firms that submitted designs were: Devrouax + Purnell, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Moody Nolan and Moshe Safdie and Associates.
