Forgotten Spaces: Voicebox by Featherstone Young

[BRIXTON] Speakers’ forum in Brixton

Brixton is one of London’s most densely populated boroughs, with a complex cultural, urban and architectural mix. It is also a deprived borough, with high levels of school exclusions and above average unemployment.

There is much to discuss, but no space to speak. The Voice Box by Featherstone Youngaims to resolve this by creating a space where people of diverse backgrounds can talk about the issues that concern them. It draws on ideas of the pop-up discussion forum, only with support services that enable people to develop a voice and take action.

The site is a long thin goods yard between two railway lines and lined on either side by railway arches. Featherstone Young say the new debating forum will bring spatial expression to different forms of discussion. It contains intimate spaces for reflection, high spaces for perspective, and arenas for open debate. It also takes the discussion on, via radio, web and graphic display, to a wider audience. ‘The Voice Box is an online discussion forum made physical,’ they say.

Forgotten Spaces: All 20 shortlisted entries feature in a public exhibition at the National Theatre until 4 July www.nationaltheatre.org.uk
