A new gateway to bring life to the neglected underpasses of the Inner Ring Road and provide a welcoming beacon to define the city of Sheffield
Sheffield city centre is bursting at the seams. Redevelopment in recent years is spreading beyond the Sheffield Inner Ring Road, affecting both the existing local community and the increasing number of pedestrians and cyclists who must cross it every day.
A ribbon like sculpture weaves its way along the ring road, rising to form an archway over its roundabouts, then falling to rest below the road in the previously neglected underpasses at their centre, where it continues its flow to form seating and smaller archways to walk or cycle underneath.
The proposal brings new life to the previously ignored and underutilised spaces, providing the local community with a practical use for them, while making the throughway a more pleasurable and memorable experience for hundreds of daily commutes.
Visible from afar, the proposal also acts as a beacon - a welcoming and recognisable landmark to define the city of Sheffield.
