Forgotten Spaces Sheffield 2011: Shortlist – Small Hallam Collider by A449, Matthew Johnson

  • Comment

The Small Hallam Collider is a public centre for idea generation, collaboration and small business incubation, developing regional wealth through enterprise and knowledge transfer

Sheffield is a city of aspiration and evident achievement, but not everyone with an idea has the confidence or facilities to make that idea grow.

The Small Hallam Collider seeks to provide a protective hub to those individuals. It is a space where ideas can be sheltered and given the resources to develop, generating emotional and monetary wealth for the individual, the city and beyond.

An idea core situated at the centre of the scheme is a place where ideas happen and are announced to the city. Protecting this is a ring of incubator units where people collaborate and ideas collide.

Small businesses can establish themselves here, supported by continuous dialogue with their peers and knowledge transfer from a resource centre.

As ideas grow and people and businesses prosper, opportunity is given to move to expansion premises still physically linked to the collider, but symbolically located outside of the protective core.
