Forgotten Spaces Sheffield 2011: Shortlist – Is The River Really Beautiful..? by John Harrison and Chantelle Stewart

  • Comment

The proposed project is an urban exploration exit station from the ‘Megatron’ culvert that runs beneath Sheffield station

Located within the open culvert at the junction of Sheaf Street and Pond Hill the proposed structure provides a safe downstream exit point from the river system and basic facilities for a small group of urban explorers.

The highly functional form and material palette is borrowed from the visual language of modern river culverts and sewers.

Access is controlled to ensure safe, supervised entry from an upstream entry station (which provides similar facilities but with a larger social space for meetings and visitors) but the system will be opened periodically to the public for guided culvert tours.

A dialogue will be opened between the urban explorers, the Environment Agency and the emergency services, with a particular stress on flood awareness, ecological observation and river safety.
