Forgotten Spaces Sheffield 2011: Shortlist – Cuthbert Bank / Walkley Flying Club by Keith Hayman and Simon Gedye

  • Comment

Set on frames that echo the support structures for advertisement hoardings, the words - Walkley Flying Club - will stand proud along Cuthbert Bank, just as the cooling towers welcomed travellers to the city in the past

We propose to create a new Sheffield landmark that will celebrate makeshift building and local culture. Specifically it is about the Walkley Flying Club, their lofts on Cuthbert Bank and the sport of pigeon flying.

Along the crescent line of the contours there will be 17 structures, carrying the letters and words –Walkley Flying Club. The letters will be 7 metres high and wherever possible will use found materials from the remains of lofts on the site.

The sign will complement the poetry on the sides of buildings in Sheffield City Centre. It will be clearly seen by travellers from Penistone Road and across the Upper Don Valley.
