I have never written to a journal or newspaper in more than 40 years of professional life. It particularly saddens me to have to write to a journal I respect.
However, I cannot let your distorted and inaccurate piece on Tony Fitzpatrick (AJ 22.3.01) stand without comment.
Firstly, you should know that Tony became involved with the Millennium Bridge at our request. He has brilliantly led an Arup team to resolve the problem and, as you know, work is shortly to proceed on the bridge. Arup can never thank him enough for what he has achieved.
When our board discussed fundamental organisational changes, which include a new Americas Division of 500 staff (not 150 as you stated), we looked for the most dynamic leader to drive this important part of our business forward.
Tony was our first selection because of his supreme technical qualities and leadership. The suggestions you have made in your article could not have been further from the truth, and it is a matter of great regret that you should have chosen to publish such a false and misleading account.
