These are the first images of Sutherland Hussey’s canopied entrance to a ski resort in Xiling, China
Positioned at the juncture between the north and south mountain ranges near Chengdu, the structure will act as a symbolic ‘gateway’ to the area.
Three columns with diagonal struts support a 40 metre long by 8 metre deep timber canopy which provides shelter for the visitors as they enjoy views in both directions. It also houses a small ticket/security office next to the access road.
The gateway forms part of a wider masterpan to establish Xiling and its surrounding area as a major tourist attraction, whilst preserving a vital ecosystem of international importance.
It consists of three parts: the ski-slope including Xiling Village, the lower cable-car station and the top-most cable-station, the hiking area to the west of the ski slop and the panda reserve to the north.
