First look: Insect hotel teams buzzing

  • Comment

Five teams have been shortlisted in a contest to design London’s first five-star insect hotel chain

Launched by the City of London Corporation and British Land - in conjunction with the AJ - the Beyond the Hive competition gives the five finalists the chance to install their ‘ecologically sustainable insect habitat’ proposals in public gardens across the capital on 7-19 June.

The shortlist features teams from Arup and Pinnacle Tower-builder Brookfield, as well as entries from the German Women’s Property Group, London’s Metalanguage Design and landscaper Fisher Tomlin (see below).

Proposals must be made from recycled materials and a Golden Beetle award will be presented in two categories chosen by the public and the judging panel, which includes: CABE chairman Paul Finch, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners director Graham Stirk and Daily Telegraph beekeeping correspondent Ian Douglas.

The city parks to feature the insect hotels include: Bunhill Fields, West Smithfield, Postman’s Park, St Dunstan’s in the East and Cleary Garden.

An awards ceremony to announce the winners will be held on 1 July.
