Patel Taylor has been appointed to draw up a masterplan to redevelop the one-time News International site in Wapping - formerly a prized Amanda Levete scheme
The practice will draw up proposals for a residential-led mixed-use developmentfor client St George Central London.
St George, part of the Berkeley Group, bought the 15 acre site from News International in May, drawing the line under Amanda Levete Architects’ consented plans to remodel the main building for the media giant (see AJ 11.11.2009).
Andrew Taylor from Patel Taylor said: ‘We are delighted to be appointed on this exciting opportunity to create a truly exceptional place which makes the most of the site’s heritage and significantly improves permeability in the local area.
‘St George Central London plans to commence its community consultation in September where it will present initial concepts and listen to the communities’ views.’
News International’s move to the site in the mid-1980s was the subject of the year-long Wapping Strike that retains a place in industrial relations history. News of the World remained based at Wapping until it was closed last summer.
Patel Taylor has worked on London schemes including the London 2012 Athletes Village and the Thames Barrier Park.
