First Barking designs submitted

Proposals for the first 4,000 homes at Barking Riverside have been submitted for planning approval

The designs by Shepperd Robson and Maccreanor Lavington also include two new schools and a medical centre.

Bellway Homes and the Homes & Communities Agency, the site’s developers, already have outline permission for the 10,800 new homes on the plot. The new submission is for reserved matters approval on the first two housing phases plus a primary and secondary school and ‘the Western Quarter’, an area which will house a medical centre, day nursery and play space.

The developers are keen to point out that the second 2,500-home phase will 'focus on families' with 45 per cent of the homes having three bedrooms. In addition, 40 per cent of the development area will be open space.

The development is due to take 20 to 25 years and will eventually accommodate 26,000 people. Remediation and groundwork is already underway on the brownfield site. Construction should start late this year.

Work on the East London Transit bus route via Barking Riverside began this month with the first section due early next year but there are doubts about the proposed extension to the Docklands Light Railway.
