Bristol Mayor George Ferguson has approved a funding package for the long-awaited arena in central Bristol
Plans to build a 12,000-seat arena on the site of a former diesel depot adjacent to Temple Meads Station took a step closer last night (16 January) as the mayor approved a three year spending plan for construction.
Construction of a venue for the city was one of the former RIBA President’s key election proposals and it is hoped the venue will be completed by 2017.
The approved plans will need to be rubberstamped by the full council next month.
Ferguson says ‘my cabinet decision takes the project one step further with the only two remaining hurdles being the LEP Board to approve City Deal funding and the City Council budget meeting on 18th February.
‘All signs are that there is cross party agreement so I hope to be able to push the button on the operator appointment, design brief and procurement stages by the end of February, to meet a planned 2017 completion.
We are planning on the architectural competition taking place later in the year.’
AECOM has been appointed as the cost consultant for the scheme.
