Female architects take home £8,500 less pay

Women architects are paid on average a fifth less than their male counterparts, according to official data

Shocking new figures from the Office for National Statistics for 2012 show the average salary for female architects was £35,486 a year compared to £43,984 for males.

Earlier this year data from the AJ’s first Women in Architecture survey revealed that 47 per cent of female respondents believed they would earn more if they were male, with 44 per cent claiming that male colleagues who do the same or a similar job at their practice earned more than them. (see AJ 16.02.2012).

The overall UK average income for the profession was up 0.8 per cent to £42,563. The median salary was however lower at £35,208 falling 2.6 per cent compared to last year.

There are 26,000 architects on payrolls in the UK according to the data.

Intriguingly just 12.7 per cent of the more than 230 qualified architects who responded to our State of the Profession Survey said they earned between £37,000 and £42,000 a year and only 5.1 per cent claimed they took home a salary of between £43,000 and £47,000.

More worrying is that of those polled so far more than a quarter of qualified architects were paid less than £26,000 (26.7 per cent).

The wide-ranging survey closes next week. The full results will be published in December.
