Featherstone Young completes ‘Ty-Hedfan’ house

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] Featherstone Young Architects has completed this rural house above a river in Brecon Beacons, Wales

The 223m² project features a cantilevered living room and double height kitchen and dining spaces that open onto an elevated courtyard.

Called ‘Ty-Hedfan’ – which means floating house in Welsh – the building occupies a sloping site close to where the rivers Ysgir Fach and Ysgir Fawr converge.

Cantilevers were necessitated by a strict 6 metre-wide  ‘no build-zone’ at the river bank’s edge.

The main building features a timber and steel structure clad in slate and stone.

A statement from the practice explained: ‘The house is a further exploration of the practice’s interest in highly site specific and contextual architecture, taking its cue from the traditional Welsh long house form, using local materials such as slate and stone and by fully utilizing the topography of the site to create a striking and unique form.’

Built as a home for Featherstone Young Architects’ partners Jeremy Young and Sarah Featherstone, the project won planning permission in 2006 and was built by a local contractor Osborne Builders of Builth Wells.

The two-bedroom home is topped with a sedum ‘green roof’.
