FCBS to submit £250m Belfast university plans

Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBS) is set to lodge plans for its largest ever scheme - the competition-winning design for the University of Ulster’s new £250million Belfast City Campus

According to the practice, the project will create a ‘high-density urban university campus’ which blurs the boundaries between the ‘learning environments, the city and between the faculties’.

The 70,000m² Central Teaching, Faculty and Social Learning development in north Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter will accommodate up to 15,000 students and is being billed as ‘a catalyst for significant investment into the local economy’.

The proposal features three new buildings and a part refurbishment of their existing campus for Art, Design and the Built Environment.

Senior partner at FCBS Studios Keith Bradley said: ‘The Greater Belfast Development for The University of Ulster is a fantasticopportunity to create a new type of high density urban university campus.

‘A composite of forms created in response to a key historic city centre site and provide a community agenda of open access to higher education. A model that reverses the rarified internal world of the traditional university quad to one that openly addresses the streets and urban spaces of the surrounding city neighbourhood.’

The first phase of the scheme is set to complete in mid-2015.
