FAT and Niall McLaughlin on Hastings Pier shortlist

The six-strong shortlist of practices competing to redesign Hastings’ arson-struck pier has been revealed

Practices shortlisted in the RIBA-organised design competition include Wilkinson Eyre, Adams & Sutherland, de Rijke Marsh Morgan (dRMM) and White Arkitekter AB.

Interviews with finalists will be held next week with the winner set to be announced exclusively in the AJ.

The RIBA relaunched the competition following an arson attack in October which destroyed 95 per cent of the pier’s structure and temporarily put on hold the procurement process.

A total of 54 practices entered the competition to restore the pier which opened in 1872 and was designed by Eugenius Birch, architect of Brighton’s now ruined West Pier.

Ongoing deterioration forced the seafront tourist attraction’s closure in 2008, but the Hastings Pier and White Rock Trust (HPWRT) was established to spearhead its restoration. HPWRT appointed RIBA to manage the selection of a design team for the job.
