Farrells to make Leicester University campus 'coherent'

  • Comment

Terry Farrell and Partners has been commissioned to produce a masterplan for the University of Leicester

The firm has teamed up with Buro Happold to assess the existing building stock as part of the university’s masterplan strategy.

Farrells will investigate whether the site uses its space efficiently, with potential solutions under consideration ranging from changes in timetabling to new forms of accommodation for the university which is looking to grow student numbers.

The practice will also focus on transforming the public realm of the campus. Partner Neil Bennett, who will lead the project, told the AJ: ‘We want to make the best of what the university has got to make the public realm coherent and legible.

‘We want to produce a good mental map of the campus for students.’

The masterplan is set to complete in late summer following consultation with the university and wider city region.

Buro Happold director of estates Paul Goffin, said: ‘The University of Leicester announced its £1 billion development framework plan in 2008 and since then £52 million has been invested in new projects as well as improvements and major maintenance of the university’s estate.

‘This masterplan will detail future developments that will enhance the university’s academic and social spaces in order to optimise the use of the campus for the benefit of staff, students and visitors.’
