Farrell to home in on quality with housing design initiative

  • Comment

Sir Terry Farrell is leading a three-year drive to improve the quality of housing design in the UK (AJ 19.7.01). The 'Building for Life' initiative - a collaboration between CABE, the House Builders' Federation and the Civic Trust - has been set up to press house builders to learn from exemplars gathered from around the world.

'Well-designed housing should not be the preserve of the few, ' said Sir Terry. 'We need to create high-quality products that are within the reach of every house-buyer and tenant.'

Launching the initiative, housing and planning minister Lord Falconer criticised 'soulless and dispiriting' estates which waste land and foster car dependency. 'For too long, too many housing estates designed for nowhere are found everywhere, ' he said.
