Farrell submits Folkestone harbour overhaul plans

Terry Farrell and Partners has submitted outline plans for 1,000 homes on Folkestone harbour and seafront

The project for landowner Folkestone Harbour Company sets out a vision to transform the Kent town’s waterfront over the next 10 to 15 years.

Panter Hudspith, FAT and Birds Portchmouth Russum designed early plans for seafront housing for the scheme.

Submitted to Shepway District Council, the proposals include new public spaces, small-scale retail, restaurants and recreational facilities including the potential for sea sports and water-based activities.

The masterplan has been broken down into phases which can later be designed in detail and submitted for planning.

Housing would range from one bedroom apartments to larger beach homes and would be aimed both at local residents and commuters working in the capital.

Trevor Minter, on behalf of Folkestone Harbour Company, said: ‘This outline plan is an important step towards realising a once in a century opportunity to create a seafront of which Folkestone can be proud. He challenges are enormous, but we are determined to get the formula right, even this takes time.’

The redevelopment vision replaces a Foster and Partners-designed masterplan which fell by the wayside two years ago.

A planning decision is expected in spring 2013.
