Farrell draws up fresh plans for Mount Pleasant

Terry Farrell and Partners is working on the latest masterplan to redevelop Royal Mail’s Mount Pleasant site in Clerkenwell, London

The west London-based AJ100 practice has drawn up as-yet-unseen plans for a 93,000m² residential and commercial vision on the high-profile sorting office site.

Part of a string of Royal Mail redevelopment schemes in the capital thought to be worth £1 billion in total, Farrell’s redevelopment vision has emerged 18 months ahead of a planned sell-off of the 500-year-old postal company.  

The 2.6 hectare scheme would see more than half of the former prison site transformed into housing and offices. A planning application is expected in Spring next year.

Royal Mail Group property director Martin Gafsen said: ‘Royal Mail has a clear strategy to ensure we derive maximum value from any property we no longer require for our operations.

‘This includes selling the freehold or leases which we hold and, where appropriate, working with planning authorities to ensure that properties we are selling are attractive to new owners.  We have a strong track record in using the proceeds from disposal of surplus property to invest in the mail operation. These changes are part of the ongoing modernisation and investment in our business.  This is vital in order to put Royal Mail on a sound and sustainable footing for the future.’

In February, local authorities Camden Council and Islington Council adopted a supplementary planning document for the location drawn up by Farrells.

Seven years ago John McAslan + Partners was appointed to work on a 55,0002 mixed-use scheme for the plot.

Royal Mail is investing £32 million in modernising Mount Pleasant and plans to maintain operational facilities on part of the site.
