Farmers should not be blamed for problems

  • Comment

Where does everyone get the idea that farmers are the custodians of the countryside?

Farming was subsidised to provide food during and after the war. The population got the benefit of reduced food prices and got to like cheap food. All in the name of selfsufficiency.

Subsidies should be gradually reduced and people should pay the correct price for produce. If you read the press there is an undercurrent of feeling for a return to mixed farming and its associated skills.

Why blame the farmers for 'cannibalism'? It infuriates me that the wholesale feed merchants and pharmaceutical companies appear to have got off lightly in the whole issue.

They advertised and sold the feed and medicines to the farmers. They should be paying compensation for the distress caused to farmers and BSE sufferers, etc.

The careless ramblers and picnickers who claim to love the country expect it to be laid out for their pleasure. They should think before they drop the remains of the sandwich or pie to feed the birds. I hope there are some feeling shamefaced about their 'kindness'.

I could include rubbish bags versus dustbins.

The animal rights people would do better to campaign on these points, not indulge in the stupidities they do, like letting mink loose. There has not been a tweet out of them over foot and mouth.
