Fallon calls for single industry voice

Three weeks into his new job, construction minister Michael Fallon has called for a closer partnership between construction and government

Speaking at last night’s (10 October) BCI Awards ceremony in London, Fallon set out a three point programme to drive growth in the construction industry.

Describing himself as ‘minister for growth’, he called for a ‘close strong’ partnership between construction and government with a single voice to represent the industry.

‘I want to find a better way to listen to the construction industry as a whole,’ he said.

The minister also suggested he would ‘name and shame’ who fail to step up lending to construction companies.

Explaining construction is ‘key to growth’, he said: ‘I would like to see construction lead us out of the situation we’re in.’

He went on to pledge a renewed focus on procurement reform: ‘we’ve talked, the time is to move ahead,’ and a ‘particular focus on smaller companies in the supply chain.’

He ended: ‘You have my commitment to do everything I can to drive forward growth in your industry through closer stronger partnership between government and construction, [improving] procurement, and supporting small companies in the construction industry.’
