The first factory-built affordable housing scheme outside London gets underway next week on a brownfield site in York. The fourstorey complex, designed by Cartwright Pickard Architects, is being developed by Portakabin subsidiary Yorkon, which claims its modular building process will halve the construction timeframe.

Due for completion in early 2002, the project will provide 24 muchneeded low-cost homes.
