Facade detail: W London Hotel, Soho by Jestico + Whiles

[Working detail 24.03.11] Twin-wall facade for central London hotel

The facade to the hotel levels is a twin-wall construction, with an outer glass veil hung from the parapet at eighth floor-level, where the apartment levels begin. Facade consultant Billings Design Associates was appointed to assist with the detailed design, providing experience that enabled us to resolve the technical issues associated with such cladding systems.

The inner skin is clad with solid unitised panels with integrated punched windows. The glass veil has a ceramic frit artwork of varying patterns and densities applied to its inner face, which disguises the typical monotony of hotel elevations. The unitised panels are typically 3m high and 4.2m long to correspond with the guest room module, and are finished externally with a polyester powder-coated textured aluminium panel, coloured to reflect the Portland stone in the area.

The communal spaces within the hotel allowed us to introduce a different aesthetic approach and create three large feature areas to the facade. These are enclosed by double- or triple-height recessed curtain wall areas, using a bespoke system manufactured by Metallbau Früh.
