Eyes glazed over after seeing domestic projects

The amount of glazing on display in your recent Small Projects competition, Part 1 ('Home economics', aj 20.1.00) was quite intriguing. I find part L means a constant battle (backed up with calculations) in order to achieve a decent amount of glazing, particularly in small domestic extensions where the area of other elements available for enhanced insulation is limited.

Staircase balustrades in domestic work also frequently baffle me. Am I missing something or are Surrey building inspectors overzealous?
