AJ120 #=88: WCEC Group

28 employed architects, 11% female architects, new entry

WCEC is traditionally a specialist in the commercial area, but in the past year it has diversified with growth in the urban residential, student living, mixed-use and leisure sectors. It has restructured its business to reflect this change and, says managing director Alex Wall, ‘Our design ethos is evolving right now.’ Moving away from the pure commercial focus, he says, means that ‘in the last year we have submitted entries for numerous architectural design competitions, as well as leading a wide range of newly appointed planning applications for large developments. Design is a strong focus for our business going forward.’ However, Wall is concerned by the flaws in the OJEU tender process, particularly the fact that ‘it doesn’t support/encourage new entrants. This should be addressed.’
