Barrister-at-law Michael Humphries, who is CABE's choice for planning inquiries, recently took silk; no doubt he was as surprised as the others present at the ceremony to be informed by that master of tact, Lord Irvine, that the Lord Chancellor's Department was embarked on a consultation process which would mark the end of the QC system. With no obvious sense of irony, the Wallpaper King spluttered on about modernisation, having failed to notice that his announcement might be spoiling what was supposed to be a day of celebration of talent. When will the Bar Council undertake public consultations about abolishing the unaccountable powers of over-mighty Scottish subjects?
