English Partnerships, the publicly owned development and regeneration body, has issued a call for sustainability in its annual report.

It states that 'irreparable damage' to the environment can be avoided only if the government pursues integrated transport policies, sets new standards for green construction and regenerates deprived communities - particularly in the coalfields. It also issues the warning: 'All too often public spending or regulation designed to address a single issue can exacerbate the others. The nation can no longer afford to take such a narrow approach.'
