Red bricks 'greener' than blue? Both greener than yellow? Not so.

A number of environmental fallacies have been laid to rest with the conclusion of a three-year research project by BRE, 'Environmental Profiles of Construction Products, Components and Buildings', which was funded by a DETR Partners in Technology initiative. The project compared the environmental impact of a wide range of generic construction materials.

The BRE methodology aims for consistency across types of material and examines environmental impact over the materials' life cycle - including manufacture, life span and demolition. Profiles are presented in terms of their environmental 'burden' or as impacts on, for example, climate and ozone depletion. BDA is one of the trade associations supporting the project which it is intended will evolve further to address post factory- gate phases in the life cycle.
