A competition to design a £2 million café off the King’s Road in south-west London has been launched.

Organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants on behalf of the Cadogan Estate, the two-stage contest to design a replacement for the Gelateria Valerie in Duke of York Square is aimed primarily at up-and-coming practices.

Hugh Seaborn, chief executive of the Cadogan Estate said: ‘We are keen to identify and support emerging talent while providing the opportunity of consulting locally from the outset; this is a pivotal site in one of the most vibrant parts of the capital and we are looking for designers with flair and originality.’

The project’s backers are encouraging ‘a creative exploration of the project’ and collaborations between architects andartists. The budget for the scheme, which should provide about 60 places outside and 40 inside, includes construction, fit-out and fees.

The deadline to enter the competition is 20 August, 2012. Between five and seven shortlisted teams will be paid an honorarium to work up concept designs.

The finalists will be announced in the autumn, with a winning team announced by early December 2012.
